Dear Reader!

This settlement, whose website you looked up, is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Pest county. The first written record of this place is from 1067. As of this date, the early Árpád-age, the history of our village is continuous. Although natives had to leave their homes several times because of wars, survivors with new population repeopled the settlement few years later. The village had been the land of episcopacy in Vác from 1398 until 1945. For centuries inhabitants had belonged to two religions (reformed, and catholic), which was reflected by the settlement’s structure. Protestants lived in Alszeg, catholics lived in Felszeg (closer to Budapest). Alsónémedi soon became consolated because of the conjugate effect of previously mentioned continuity, more favourable conditions of production –compared to other regions, nearness of the capital city and because of trader and enterpreneurial habits. „Little- Kecskemét” attribute, national right of holding markets from the end of XIX. century and country-town ranging also denotes it. Strong ethnographic, religious, productional and commercial traditions based on the social structure of the village, a lot of economic and civil society was established. Although agricultural collectivity couldn’t be averted, we achieved the result that the co-operative society and the nation-wide famous economy never been merged.

In the end of 80s némedi farmers were the first –in the country-, who were open for developing private farming. The majority of Alsónémedi inhabitants works in the agriculture nowadays. Others are active wage-earners, partly in enterpreneurial sphere which settled down and strengthened in the last decade, partly still find their working places in the capital city.

From the change of local regime (1990) settlement began to develop quickly. Growing number of ( mostly younger and middle-aged) population also proves it. Within 15 years a claim was set up two times for enlargement of kindergarden and primary school. In the last decade total pipeline infrastructure was established. A lot of companies settled down in the north and south enterpreneurial area of the settlement.

For centuries in the life of Alsónémedi’s people land had the same sense as endless struggle for life. The struggle of our ancestors was not in vain. For us, descendants reserved such a place in Kárpát-basin, where is good to live the everyday life. After this introduction, please, „turn over” to further demonstration sites. The content of this portal was compiled the way to give valuable informations for inhabitants and visitors.

Alsónémedi geographically and historically belongs to a bigger region, is part of Duna-Tisza margin, which –according to our knowlegde- filled up in new Stone age with agrarian and animal-keeper inhabitants. Animal funerals, which made Alsónémedi famous (badenian and sarmata cemeteris) dates back to the Copper age. From Bronze age fossils come from findspots in Hemp-field and Bigmountain.

Alsónémedi is one of the oldest settlements in Pest county, IV. Béla’s diploma from 1267 keeps the ancient name of the village, „Nywyg”. Nywyg belonged to the land of Árpád Clan, then Aba Clan got it. In the XIV. century Némedi had been the land of episcopacy in Vác. Inhabitants in the XVII. century mainly were reformed, church service had been in the church, which was built in 1458. In Kuruts times population of Némedi considerably increased, this process was ended by Rákóczi War of Independence.

In 1718 Bishop of Vác placed a catholic vicar here and capture the church in 1719. Némedi developed into an agricultural settlement, because nearness of Pest averted the industrial development. The outbreak of (1848) Hungarian War of Independence, the failure of feudalism was felt in Némedi. At the beginning of War of Independence the village raised a lot of national guards. A wooden headboard was raised to their memory in Liberty square. The First World War demanded a lot of victims and financial sacrifices from Alsónémedi, a renovated memorial in Liberty square keeps the memory of the heroes. In the interwars period big landowners reorganized their lands with parcellisation, so many people got land. After 1945 a new era began, land distribution roused the masses. Industry started to develop slowly.

Saving-Bank of Alsónémedi and its Region was founded in 1959, which is one of the most determining banks in this area nowadays.
